about

Everyone has childhood memories , some good , some bad. My recollections consist of half imagined , half lucid dreamscapes. What connects them is the truth that lies beneath.
The opening track "Bring me home for the summer" is not about bricks and mortar , but about miles of fields and woodlands. A world where you left reality behind and melted into worlds of cowboys ,Indians ,spies and the odd alien. Underground camps , treehouses and an assortment of home made weaponry that would probably carry a prison sentence now.
Dock leaves , liquid paraffin provided instant medication . calamine lotion an of course the obligatory butter for the bumps (a particular favourite of elderly relatives! )
"The day the panther moved in" concerns a gentleman who moved into my street in the '70's. He had no family . Due to the time period he was immediately suspected of being murderer "The Black panther". Donald Nielson had been spotted near us days earlier. As it happens Frank turned out to be a very nice family man and big jazz fanatic.
who remembers smoking reeds in hay fields , only to find insects dwelling inside .
i have nearly died twice from choking , once involving an earwig and the second time , an extremely evil vintage sweet known as the spangle.
Catapult ditch was part of a network of tunnels once that had collapsed leaving trenches. We spent an entire afternoon in one once , pinned down by the sinister Mr Percival and his powerful ,but inaccurate air rifle , our catapults were no match !
Placing bets with fruit salads, blackjacks and bazooka joes on which ladybird would leave the chalk circle first before climbing aboard the trusty Raleigh Chopper to speed home to see my first girlfriend , the beautiful Jenny Hanley .
In 1969 , when we were all around the ages of 6-10 years ,we were gathered together at a friends house and taken to the local cinema to see "20,000 leagues under the sea".
We never saw our friend again. He had developed leukaemia earlier in the year and passed away some months after the visit to the cinema..
His parents thought it a nice way for us all to say goodbye without the upset.
He was my 3rd best friend back then. Now ,55 years later I realise he was my number 1 best friend.

I guess all the dock leaves and butter in the world cannot cure some things !!!!!

But it was nice remembering. (1967-1973)

PS , on a lighter note ,the photo on the sleeve has absolutely nothing to do with the story. But it would be nice if all us kids could meet up there again one day.
